Police Contact Numbers

There has been some confusion about which numbers to use to contact the police; everyone knows 999 (or 112) for emergencies, but what if you need to report a crime or contact the police with information? We asked the local police to set this out, and their response was as follows:

"The first port of call for emergency matters is always 999. The next method of communication is 0300 123 1212. This is for incidents that are not an emergency. The Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) number 07768 178292 should be used for advice, to report things such as criminal damage or to bring other non emergency issues to our attention.

Our SNT works on an 8 hours shift pattern so when we are not on duty or on team rest days our mobile is diverted to one of the teams that are on duty that day. This is so that you at least speak to a human and not a machine where possible. The commissioner made a pledge (more commonly known as the policing pledge) which says that you should be contacted within 24 hours of leaving a message on an SNT mobile's answer phone. On occasion when that isn't possible it will be an officer not connected with Blackheath SNT who makes that call back.

An easier way of summarising the communication system is: If your car is being stolen call 999. If your car has already been stolen dial the 0300 number and if you have information about who took your car call the SNT."
